1 Jul 2007 - July Newsletter

Dear Parent(s),

Newsletter ? July 2007

As this academic year comes to an end I would like to take this opportunity to say many thanks to everyone who has made this yet another successful year. Firstly I would like to thank the staff for all their hard work and commitment. I am in the privileged position of seeing first hand how hard all the staff work and how much care they show your children. I would also like to thank the Governors for all their help and guidance. I must also thank you, the parents. I know that sometimes parents have worries and concerns and that occasionally we are not always able to reach a satisfactory compromise. However, I am grateful for your support. Lastly, of course, I would also like to thank the children who continue to be a credit to you and to themselves.

I have been asked to mention the Year Six end of year party on Thursday 19th July. Please note the venue has been changed and the party will now be held in Cublington Pavillion. For those who don?t know the way it will be signposted from Bushmead Road. Parents of children arriving by hired transport will need to be at the Pavillion by 5pm at the latest. Also, Mrs. Coe and Mrs Vallance are organising a Charity Ball in aid of The Haemophilia Society and Juvenile Diabetes. This will be held on 27th October 2007 and the cost will be approximately £40 per ticket, which will include a three course meal and champagne reception. Enquiries about tickets or sponsorship for this event contact either Mrs Coe (Myles and Jim?s mum) or Mrs Vallance (Jake Weighell?s mum).

After our School Ball in June we found a gentleman?s black cummerbund. If you think this belongs to you then please collect it from the school office. Also found in school is a little gold/brass oval frame with a photograph of an old lady on one side and an old gentleman on the other. This was obviously brought into school as a ?Special Item? and must be of sentimental value to someone. If you think the frame might belong to you or to anyone you know then please contact the school office.

As mentioned last month, Miss Mitchell is leaving at the end of this term. The class structure for next year is:

Reception - Mrs Shephard
Year One - Mrs Woodward
Year Two - Mrs Knight
Year Three - Miss Rawlins-Smith
Year Four - Miss Turner
Year Five - Mrs Hawkett
Year Six - Miss Albrighton

As from September the school SENCO will be Mrs Woodward. I would like to thank Mrs Hawkett for the wonderful work she has done during the last 20 years. Having been appointed Deputy Headteacher Mrs Hawkett is now concentrating on other aspects of the school.
I am sorry that Sports Day was cancelled on Monday. Unfortunately the field wasn?t suitable. It has been re-arranged for Monday 9th July at 1.15 pm.

The children in Key Stage Two have been fortunate this term in being provided with cricket tuition through the ?Chance to Shine? campaign. Trefor Williams has been running a Year 3 / 4 lunchtime
club, taking Year 5 and Year 6 within curriculum time and an after school club for Year 5 and 6. ?Chance to Shine? was launched in May 2005 as a ten year campaign to bring competitive cricket to state schools through high quality coaching from local clubs. If you are interested in helping the campaign you can find further information on www.chancetoshine,org I also have a leaflet at school.

I need to inform you that there was a positive feedback to the recent questionnaire about school meals provision. The next step is for the school to analyse the responses and draw up an action plan. Water is already provided during the lunch period and if you wish to take advantage of this then they will need to bring a sports bottle and then water will be served as appropriate. Further developments will need more detailed consideration. The next meeting of the working group is Monday 17th September at 2pm. Anybody interested in contributing is warmly invited to attend.

I would like to take this opportunity to mention a couple of school matters. In response to a parental enquiry I confirm that girls may wear trousers from after the October half term until the end of the Spring Term. All other uniform requirements are in the prospectus, a copy of which is in the entrance area. Whilst on the issue of clothing, it would be really helpful if you would label all your child?s? clothing, including his/her PE kit. We do have order forms which enable you to buy numerous name tags at low prices. Please contact Mrs. Blackman in the school office for details. I would also stress that children should wear school shoes not trainers. I am very proud to be associated with Whitchurch School and I feel strongly that the appearance of staff and children is a very important factor in ensuring that standards, which I believe are high in many areas, remain high. In this respect I must say that I do feel that the length of the hair of a few boys is rather long. I?m not asking that it is cut at a specific length, just a reasonable length. In any case long hair should be tied back if possible on health and safety grounds. May I also ask again, that whilst I try to be reasonable in considering requests of leave of absence, you do not arrange holidays within the school term. I do appreciate that there may be extenuating circumstances but any absence does impact on your child?s? education and does cause considerable disruption to the class teacher.

Can we ask that you please return children?s portfolios to their class teachers at parents evening next week or definitely by the end of term. Year 6 children may keep theirs as a record of their progress.

Hopefully the end of year reports will be issued next week. There are also one or two dates I need to give.

Yours sincerely,
