1 Oct 2006 - October Newsletter
Dear Parent(s),
Newsletter ? October 2006
Summer seems a long time ago now and the children have now settled into their new classes. The new Reception children have been busy learning the new routines whilst Years One and Two have been adapting to the demands of learning new areas of the curriculum. Year Three have started to learn French and also enjoyed a ?Roald Dahl Day?, which saw them walking backwards through the school!! Year Four have produced some lovely work whilst Year Five have been working hard on their history topic ?The Romans?, which included a visit to St. Albans. Year Six have been studying ?The Greeks? and are due to go soon to the British Museum.
I would like to take this opportunity to say congratulations to the following children who have been chosen as the new House Captains; Katie Rivero-Cabrera, Jamie Westbrook, Heidi Smith, Sam Morton, Gemma Beattie, Michael Rothery, Lauren Lucas and Elliot Smith.
This term saw the school being provided with a new contractor for the bus service. Unfortunately there have been several issues which I have passed on to the LEA who awarded the contract and who is responsible for monitoring the service. I am informed by the LEA that the contract allows the bus to be up to half an hour late In other words as long as the bus arrives by 3.45 p.m. then the contract is being fulfilled. This seems ridiculous to me and I have said so. I will continue to pass on concerns but I would suggest that if parents have any issues with the service that they put them in writing to, Tracey Vere, Passenger Transport Section, County Hall, Aylesbury, Bucks HP20 1YZ. In this day and age I am also surprised that any new contract issued did not stipulate that seat belts should be fitted.
I have been asked by one local resident who lives opposite the school, to request that parents do not park in her drive. I know parking etc. is an issue and hopefully this will be looked at again by the School Travel Plan Group when they next meet. May I also just remind you that for health and safety reasons parents who come after school to pick up their children from clubs should not use the school car park.
Staff have received queries as to whether or not children are allowed to bring sweets in on their birthday to share with the class. The present policy is that this is allowed and must, obviously, go via the teacher, but we would ask that lollipops are not brought in.
Can we remind girls that they should have their hair up for school. Also earrings should be studs and removed for PE.
Waddesdon CE School have asked me to advertise the ?Primary and Secondary Colour Exhibition 2006?, being held from Thursday 12th October to Sunday 15th October, 10 am ? 5 pm daily, in the Coach House, Waddesdon Manor. We are exhibiting a painting in the style of Lowry, produced by the present Year One, and pieces of work by two children in the present Year Four. Waddesdon CE School is also running some adult learning courses on Saturday 11th November and Saturday 3rd March 2007. Leaflets are available in our school entrance.
1st Granborough Scout Group desperately need committee members and leaders so that they can continue to run Beaver, Cub and Scout units in North Marston. Many boys, from Whitchurch Combined School, have been or currently are members of the Granborough Scout Group, and benefit from the range of activities which scouting provides. Unfortunately the Group has had to suspend Scouts, hopefully temporarily, because of the lack of leaders. Ideally two leaders are required for Scouts and a further leader will be required soon to help run Beavers. They also need volunteers to join the committee to help with running the Group. If you can help or would like further information, please contact Sheila Lodge (Group Scout Leader) on 01296 641473.
This year?s ?Harvest Celebration? is on the theme of seeds. Mrs Tilby is holding an assembly this Friday 6th October, when seed packets will be sent home. The idea is that the packets should be decorated and then a money donation placed inside. This year all the funds collected will be forwarded to Oxfam. We will be again participating in the Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal and a leaflet will be sent home soon. In the meantime start collecting your empty shoe boxes. Also, we are holding a ?Jeans for Genes? Day on Friday 20th October. Normal school uniform should be worn except the children should wear jeans. We are asking for a donation of £1 to go to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children plus four other children?s charities.
Just to inform you that during Parents? Evening the computer room will be open and Mrs Shields will be available to discuss with parents the units that the children will be covering and the software they will be using. She will not be able to talk about individual children during this time.
Finally we have a vacancy for a lunch-time supervisor from January 2007, for one year, to cover maternity leave. Job share would be considered. If you are interested please leave your name with the school office.
