1 Sep 2006 - September Newsletter

Dear Parent(s),

Newsletter ”V September 2006

May I welcome you all back to Whitchurch School. In particular I would like to welcome parents and children new to the school. I hope it is the beginning of a long and rewarding partnership. I also hope you had a lovely break over the summer. You will shortly be receiving a letter from your child”¦s class teacher detailing aspects specific to their form. At this point I would like to formally welcome Mrs Shephard (Reception Class) and Miss Turner (Year 4).

It promises to be yet another very busy term, but before detailing dates etc. there are one or two specific issues I wish to mention.

Firstly Mrs Hoaen has asked me to mention that during her maternity leave she is happy to offer extra tuition in all curriculum areas and to all year groups. If you may be interested please contact the school office who will put you in touch with Mrs Hoaen. Mr Wells has also asked me to mention that he is willing to provide 11+ tuition if required. Again if interested please contact the school office.

The Royal Latin School have asked me to advertise their ”„Adult Scientist”¦ evening to be held on 28th November from 6 pm to 9 pm. The evening will comprise of fun experiments which you will be able to carry out at home with your children. The evening is free although there will be refreshments on sale. To register your interest please complete the attached slip and return it to me.

As you may be aware the school is a registered charity. As such we are able to claim repayment of tax under the Gift Aid Scheme. If you agree to make a donation you will receive tax relief when you complete your self-assessment tax return. We are, as a school, very fortunate that a number of parents already contribute. For this we are very appreciative. The extra funds generated through the scheme allow us to provide enrichment activities for all the children. As I have mentioned in earlier correspondence, due to the various criteria attached to funding we only receive the absolute basic, whilst many other schools receive considerably more. We are anxious to keep ”„raising the bar”¦ as far as standards are concerned but the reality is that this involves a cost.

We have taken the liberty to again mention this scheme and have attached a Gift Aid Declaration Form which we hope you will consider completing and returning to the school. May I take this opportunity to thank you for all your support.

This year we have decided to trial some new resources made available through the DfES. The resources relate to spiritual and emotional issues and help children to understand their feelings and know how to get on with each other and make friends. Each half-term we will be looking at a particular theme. The theme will start with an assembly and be followed up in class. In addition a family activity will be sent home each half-term. The theme for this half-term is New Beginnings.

You may be interested in three websites which promote reading for pleasure; www.lovereading4kids.co.uk is an online bookstore set up by parents, www.readitswapit.co.uk allows users to swap old books for new ones for the cost of the postage only, and www.eswapnow.com is a similar site, allowing users to swap books, CDs, DVDs, video tapes and video games.

Please find attached the Fair Processing Notice which I am obliged to forward to you.

I would like to thank those parents who replied either about areas of school improvement or about KS1/KS2 experiences. All the replies are analysed and acted upon appropriately.

Lastly may I remind you that in the morning, supervision is provided from 8.45 a.m. Children should, if possible, not arrive any earlier. However staff have commented that last term a growing number of children were arriving late for school. Again may I politely request that all children arrive by 9 a.m. It is fairly disruptive to the class/school routine when children arrive at varying times.

JON WOODWARD

As many of you in the village are aware Jon very sadly passed away this year. It goes without saying that our thoughts are still very much with the family and Claire has asked if we could include the following in this Newsletter.

”„Claire, Henry, Will & Beth would like to thank everyone for their cards,
help and kind thoughts during the sudden and sad loss of Jon.

The kindness and encouragement shown by so many has made a great
difference to us all and we would appreciate your continued support.

Thank you all so much.”¦

Yours sincerely,

S. Blore
