1 Jan 2008 - January Newsletter

Dear Parent(s),

Newsletter – January 2008

Firstly may I wish you a very Happy New Year.  I hope you had an enjoyable and, if possible, a peaceful and restful Christmas.  This term promises to be as busy as ever.  In March Year 6 and Year 5 will be putting on a performance of ‘ Alice ’.  Further details will be sent out nearer the time but I do hope you will be able to come.  A number of visits have been arranged by different class teachers as well as sporting events.  You should soon receive a letter from your child’s teacher detailing areas of study for this term as well as information particular to the class.

The Royal Latin School have asked me to notify you of two events they are organising for this term.  On 7th February, there is a session on ‘The Magic of Science’.  This is free and open to adults and children and, I understand, looks at how conjurers have made use of scientific principles in performing their tasks.  On the 6th March, there is an adult only session on ‘De-mystifying Science’.  Again this is free and apparently, it examines the science behind some of the new concepts introduced into the new GCSE.  If you are interested in attending either of these events, please email the Royal Latin School directly on cgeorge@royallatin.bucks.sch.uk as soon as possible.

Mrs Shephard has asked whether any parent may have an unwanted paddling pool, sand tray or something similar in which they would be prepared to donate to the school.  She would like to fill the container with soil and then ‘plant’ different materials in order for her children to see how materials decompose.  If you are able to help, please contact Mrs Shephard, Mrs Grace or Mrs Blackman in the office.

In response to a parent query I thought I would just reiterate our policy that if your child is unwell, we would prefer you keep him/her off school for 24 hours or so.  Occasionally the odd child has come to school clearly unwell and within a short time has managed to infect several children.  In particular I have received advice that this new tummy bug sweeping the country remains contagious up to 48 hours after the patient has recovered.

I did, in Tuesday’s assembly, mention to the children that it would really help if they could remember when they need their PE kits, swimming costumes, musical instruments or any other things necessary for school.  Obviously we try to be understanding but we do spend a lot of time transporting different items or in supervising children making ‘help’ calls to parents.  It would just help, that’s all.  If you are not certain which things are needed for which days please contact the school.

Mrs Woodward has asked me to mention that choir will restart on Wednesday 23rd January.  The children will be informed of other club’s details in due course.

The School Association are holding their annual and very popular Quiz Night on Friday 1st February.  Tickets are available, in advance, from the school office, Karen Smethurst and Jane Chenery.

We are still collecting old mobile phones for recycling but hope to send them off very soon.  If you have any old mobile phones you wish to donate please can you send them into the school office in the next couple of weeks.

I have been approached by a child in Year 4 who, through the church, is supporting the National Children’s Home Acion for Children Campaign.  I have agreed to him placing a collection box within the school for any child to make a contribution.  The box will be emptied at the end of each term and the money will be forwarded to the NCH for their work supporting the young boy’’ initiative.

I would like to reiterate that we consider all the children to be ambassadors of the school.  In particular this extends to all times when they are wearing their uniform.  I would, therefore, be grateful if you would please let me know if there are any occasions when it is felt children may be letting themselves down.  This may be whilst on the bus coming to or going home from school or simply when they are walking home.  Although I appreciate that you may feel it is appropriate for you to reprimand the child directly yourself, it may be preferable for you to let me know so that we can deal with the issue within the school.  This may help to prevent any difficulties arising.
